New Pattern: The Everyday Lined Hat!

Denise Bayron of Bayron Handmade just released the Everyday Lined Hat pattern! On the surface, this appears to be a very simple and straightforward beanie; but like most designs that Denise creates, there is more than meets the eye. Her patterns, while very approachable, aim to be skill-building and usually incorporate some surprise elements!

In this pattern, you'll make a top-down hat using raglan increases (imparting skills needed to make a raglan sweater)! Video tutorials will guide you through techniques including magic loop and an easy tubular bind-off.

The best and most interesting feature of this pattern is that it is lined! Denise includes instructions to sew a lining into the beanie making this a knitting and a sewing project! Several suggestions are given to the type of material to line the beanie with depending upon your lifestyle, climate and intended use.

Denise and I will be hosting a Make-A-Long for the Everyday Hat beginning on Friday, June 5th. We will be offering a prize and it will be super fun! Gather all your materials and join us to cast-on at 5pm PST! More details to come.

Q&A

I sat down with Denise from Bayron Handmade (virtually of course!) to connect about the new pattern release and to catch up! I love Denise's style and I appreciate how thoughtful she is in her design work. I had the chance to ask her a few questions about her life and here ya go!

RD: What was your very first project (knit or sewn?) and do you still have it?

DB:My first knit project was a turban! I kept it for a really long time, but just recently donated it to my local American Cancer Society Charity Shop. I took a photo for posterity, but decided it is better to live minimally with the things I use regularly, rather than holding on to more "stuff." It was a heather grey turban-style beanie and it was rather cute!!

RD: Salty or Sweet?

DB:Sweet! Definitely. My favorite combo is dark chocolate with dates. OMG, yum!

RD: What inspired you to start designing?

DB:I wanted to make the clothes I can't find in the world. It's also a very cathartic experience to imagine something in my head and work to figure out the math and the construction. Nothing else beats the sensation of seeing a concept turn into a real tangible thing! Then seeing that thing worn by other people in the world magnifies the joy even more!

Things I like 🖤

If you've been working with a sourdough starter (I finally just got mine really going!) these sourdough pancakes are so good!

I bought myself a serger!!! Oh wow. It is more than a little intimidating to set up but I am excited to see what it does for my garment sewing adventures. I am really looking forward to trying these Ninni Culottes from Named Clothing.

I am finishing up the book I have been reading (The Great Alone, Kristin Hannah- so good!) and just got The Great Believers from Rebecca Makkai. What have you been reading? I will take all the recs!
