The Art of Mending: Mending 101 - Visible mending for woven fabrics (like jeans) (Nov 20th) with Daniela Steiner
Your favorite jeans are wearing out, but you can save them! We will practice basic stitches and techniques for effective, sturdy mends while having plenty of space for you to discover your own unique style.
More advanced stitches and techniques for specific areas will be discussed, as time permits.
You might not have time to finish your whole project, but you will leave with the knowledge and enthusiasm to continue at home.
Prior sewing experience not required. Reach out to @_danielamends on Instagram for more information.
Class Time
Wednesday, Nov 20th from 6 - 8 pm
Materials (not included)
- Please bring non-stretch jeans* to mend
- Denim scraps
- Thread such as hand quilting thread, embroidery floss, or sashiko thread
- Needles that will fit your thread
- Pins- regular or safety, as you prefer
- Scissors and/or snips
- Some denim scraps, needles, thread, beeswax (for conditioning the thread,) regular pins, scissors, and a seam ripper will be provided.
- You might like, but do not necessarily need: fabric marker, ruler, thimble, a small book or tile (to put behind your mend while you are pinning.)
Homework
Please wash the garment you will be mending. As we wear jeans, they get slightly stretched out of shape. Washing will return them to their neutral shape.
* What if you don't have non-stretchy jeans to mend?
You can sew a decorative patch on your jeans that haven't worn out yet.
You can use low- stretch jeans if you wear them loose.
You can mend a woven shirt or tote bag or pillow case, or whatever woven thing you want, just bring a similar fabric to use for patches, as mostly denim will be provided.
You can practice stitching on scraps and create a groovy patch to use at a later date.
Instructor
Daniela started mending because sewing is more fun than trying to find new pants that fit. She also teaches trapeze, and she really loves vegetables.
