Join us for an introduction to this very ancient and yet increasingly contemporary craft of handspinning! You will learn how to use a drop spindle to produce a skein of yarn from your very own fingertips. We will cover starting your spin, techniques for using your spindle to produce a one-ply "singles" yarn, and ways that you can finish your yarn at home once you have spun enough to fill your spindle. We'll also go over different types of fiber, fiber preparations, knitting with your handspun, and lots of resources so that you have plenty of information to launch you into your new life as a spinner.

Materials (not included)

• A drop spindle: top whorl at 1.5-2.5 oz. is best for beginning spindling. We have Kromski Drop Spindles here. Pacific Wool and Fiber has a good selection here, or you can find them on Etsy (Vermont Spindles has good spindles for beginners, or you can just do a search). Be sure to leave time for your spindle to arrive. 

• 2+ oz of fiber will be provided to each student. If you already have fiber of your own, feel free to bring it!

Instructor

Stephanie McCollough is a multi-disciplinary artist who has been spinning yarn for 20 years. She thrives on the tactile delight of this craft and will talk about it to anyone who will listen. When she doesn't have her fingers tangled in fibers you might find her sorting through paper scraps or elbow-deep in clay.

Cancellation Policy

Classes require a minimum of 3 students. An emailed notification of cancellation will be sent 2 days before the class if the minimum is not met. In the case of shop cancellation, all registered students will be refunded the class fee. Any additional fees including materials and the shipping of materials are non-refundable. Student cancellations, missed classes or no-shows can not be refunded, exchanged or transferred.
