Overshot Knitting: Pillow shams
Overshot weaving is an American artform of the Appalachian region of the United States. Overshot’s geometry may be familiar because of its ubiquity in coverlet weaving in that area in the 18th century. Its origins go even further back, appearing in northern Europe, the Phillipines and even ancient Persia. The optical patterns of the artform have been re-popularized by the Op-artist of the 1960’s and have been replicated by contemporary fiber artists and fashion brands.
In this class students will knit an overshot weaving draft that Elspeth has adapted into a knitting chart! Students will learn to carry two colors at once while knitting in the round, work in stockinette and reverse stockinette concurrently, and will be introduced to a few simple tricks to make their own, fashionable and dazzling Overshot pillow sham.Class Times
